Student Records, FERPA, and OPRA in New Jersey
Individual student education records are protected by FERPA and New Jersey student records regulations, and are not available to the public through OPRA. Parents and eligible students have a separate right of access through the district.
How to get your own or your child's records
Request them from the school district directly under FERPA and N.J.A.C. 6A:32-7, not through OPRA. The district must provide access to a parent or an eligible student.
What is public
Aggregate and de-identified district data, policies, budgets, and staff records remain public under OPRA even though individual student files are exempt.
